Head Prefect's Message

It is my honour to be appointed Head Prefect in 2019-2020. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the School Leadership team for entrusting me with this important duty. The Head Prefect pin marks the start of my term of service. It reminds me to strive for the best that I can be, to fulfil my responsibility and to overcome challenges ahead. Indeed, tremendous courage and confidence are required to take up this very position. Fortunately, I have never been alone. I would like to thank our teacher advisors, Miss Lee and Ms Lau, for their unfailing support. Of course, the hard work of all our prefects should never be forgotten. With your unwavering dedication, we have succeeded in serving the school altogether as one.

Looking back, it has been a long way before I reach this significant milestone and become who I am today. I was pinned as a school prefect in Secondary 3. I still remember how difficult it was for me to give reminders to senior form schoolmates for their misbehaviours.

My heart was filled with fear and hesitation back then. One year later, I became a prefect leader. Through participating and organising different school events and activities, I have sharpened my communication and problem-solving skills, making my way to achieve my goal of becoming an effective leader. There is nothing more rewarding than equipping myself with more essential leadership skills and witnessing my own growth throughout the journey in the Prefect Board.

A famous American author, John Maxwell once said, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” Leaders know the way because they must be at the forefront to lead and guide the team throughout the process. Besides being the “torchbearer”, they are also someone who steps back after pointing out the direction. In this way, the team is given the chance to take the initiative and develop as a whole. This is also why I aspire to be an effective leader, not just a manager. Managers focus only on the result of the task but leaders focus on the development of the people.

To influence others, a leader goes the right way to inspire, persuade and encourage others through words and actions. Influence may be about compliance at the basic level but going beyond that, it is more about the minor behaviours in the daily lives of leaders themselves. In order to set as a qualified role model, leaders have to be meticulous with their own behaviours. Ultimately, influences allows leaders to get things done and achieve desirable outcomes.

The theme of the Prefect Board this year is ‘Ebullience”, which means the quality of being cheerful and enthusiastic about something. Prefect Board is a team, a team of passionate members who have gratefully accepted our duty and gone on the way to serve and to lead. We are the staunch backing of one another, together we experience, together we learn. This shaped us into flexible and resilient leaders, who are capable of exceeding satisfaction. While doing so, we also pursue our full measure of happiness. In the coming days, we hope to seize the potential of all prefects who are enthusiastic to serve and will do our best in showing them the way to become informed leaders of themselves and others so that we can work hand in hand to maintain our school’s discipline.

Fellow schoolmates, each of your support is decisive to our success. Our door is always open as we are to your opinions. May the Prefect Board of 2019 to 2020 carry you into a successful year. Thank you.
